Algal factsheet: Ulva (ex Enteromorpha) (Ulvaceae)


Diagnostic features

Branched filamentous chlorophyte with masses of small green, variably shaped cells forming long hollow branching tubes. The tubes are hollow, and their walls are one cell thick.  Each cell contains a green, cup-shaped, parietal chloroplast with a single pyrenoid.

Typical habitats

Reaches high biomass in nutrient enriched, brackish or marine intertidal habitats

Notes

As much marine as freshwater.  Other species of Ulva are familar to many as sea lettuce, which are flat sheets two cells thick, and are more distinctly marine.
