Diagnostic features

Unicellular or colonial chlorophyte with small crescent-shaped cells, each containing a green parietal chloroplast with pyrenoid. Several cells may cluster together to form a disorganised colony, which is not bound in mucilage.

Typical habitats

Found in the plankton of nutrient-rich ponds including sewage ponds

Notes

Some species formerly in Selenastrum have been transferred to Pseudokirchneriella, Monoraphidium, Kirchneriella, Sorastrum, or Raphidocelis.
