TACHINIDAE: Tachininae: Proscissionini: Neotachina Malloch, 1938

Neotachina obtusa Malloch, 1938, orig. des. [NZAC].

Diagnosis

Characteristics of Neotachina include: 1. Body size 11 – 14mm; 2. Face with antennal grooves separated by facial carina 3. Parafacials wider at narrowest point than postpedicel; 4. Gena height at most 1/2 as high as eye; 5. Parafacials haired to at least half way down the eyes; 6. 6th abdominal tergite concealed or visible as narrow strip only. Note: This genus keys out together with Chaetopletha, Phaoniella, Platytachina, Plethochaetigera, and Tachineo. It is considerably difficult to find satisfactory external characters to distinguish these genera in a dichotomous key. This difficulty is expressed by Malloch 1938 several times over as well as by Dugdale 1969. A thorough revision at the genus level is needed that includes molecular analysis, rearing and collecting of new material.
