Diagnosis
Characteristics of Phaoniella include: 1. Body size 8.5 – 10mm; 2. Face with shallow antennal grooves separated by a wide rounded facial carina visible in profile; 3. Parafacials haired to about or just past mid-way; 4. Eyes haired; 5. scutellum with 3 pairs of marginal setae; 5. Female fore tarsi not dilated; 6. Male with vertex not wider than postpedicel; 7. Male 5th sternite with deep a excision in each lobe. Note: This genus keys out together with Chaetopletha, Neotachina, Platytachina, Plethochaetigera, and Tachineo. It is considerably difficult to find satisfactory external characters to distinguish these genera in a dichotomous key. This difficulty is expressed by Malloch 1938 several times over as well as by Dugdale 1969. A thorough revision at the genus level is needed that includes molecular analysis, rearing and collecting of new material.Distribution in NZ
