Characteristics of Altaia include: 1. Body size < 7mm; 2. Parafacials haired on upper half; 3. parafacials at middle narrower than post pedicel; 4. Eyes sparsely haired; 5. Aristal segment 3 slightly elbowed above segment 2; 6. apical scutellar bristles absent or at most a pair of minute fine hairs; 7. abdominal tergites 3-5 with discal bristles.Distribution in NZ
South Island: CO, NN, SD. Distribution after Malloch 1938, the genus might have a wider distribution.
