Diagnostic features

Unicellular chlorophyte with rounded to slightly pear-shaped cells and 2 flagella of equal length. Strands of cytoplasm span a clear space between the protoplast and the cell wall. Bright red accessory pigment usually masks the green chloroplasts.

Typical habitats

Occasionally found in ponds or puddles; common in bird-baths.

Notes

Their unusual red pigmentation may turn the water deep red.
