Invasive invertebrate threats

In New Zealand there are more than 2000 species of invasive invertebrates already established. Some of these, such as Vespula wasps, have become abundant invaders that threaten our native ecosystems. More invasive invertebrates are continually arriving.

Landcare Research is investigating the threats posed by invasive invertebrate species already established in New Zealand, as well as any other invaders that might breach our borders. Our research includes: assessing the potential risks and impacts; identification of species;  designing surveillance programmes to detect species; and developing strategies for pest management (especially for Vespula wasps and ants). The ultimate aim of this research is to protect natural ecosystems and reduce the economic losses for primary industries.
