Introductory notes. A full synonymic checklist and annotated catalogue has been published by Larivière & Larochelle (2004: Heteroptera (Insecta: Hemiptera): catalogue. Fauna of New Zealand 50: 330 pp.). References documenting taxonomic changes made after 2004 are listed in the bibliography section of this checklist. The current checklist provides more up-to-date information than the lists recently published in Gordon (ed. 2010. New Zealand Inventory of Biodiversity: 2. Christchurch, University of Canterbury Press. 544 p.).

Lygaeidae. The classification of Henry (1997), based on a comprehensive cladistic analysis of world taxa, is used here. This classification is generally (and almost universally) accepted; see also Schaefer (2009 in Resh & Cardé, Encyclopedia of Insects) and Henry (2009 in Foottit & Adler, Insect Biodiversity, Chapter 10). The recent use of Orsillidae as a full family by some New Zealand and Australian workers on the basis of Sweet (2000)'s paper on seed and chinch bugs of economic importance (in Schafer & Panizzi's Heteroptera of economic importance) seems premature. Sweet (2000) indicates that although his arrangement of taxa [in this particular publication] varies from Henry (1997) his [Sweet's] long-term study on the higher classification of Lygaeoidea awaits molecular data and has not yet been published.

Miridae. It is uncertain whether Macrolophus pygmaeus (Miridae) has become established in New Zealand (see Flynn et al. 2010. Zootaxa 2622: 68).

Tingidae. Depending on classifications Cantacaderidae may be regarded as a full family or as a subfamily of Tingidae, the Cantacaderinae.

• Taxa are sorted alphabetically first by family, then by genus and species.
• The biostatus indicates whether species are endemic, native (indigenous but not endemic) or adventive (introduced) in New Zealand.
