Algal factsheet: Gymnodinium (Gymnodiniidae)
Diagnostic features
Cells roughly spherical, with a groove (cingulum) circling the cell containing one of two flagella. The cingulum is at approx. the cell equator, so the two halves of the cell are a similar size. The periplast plates surrounding the cells of this genus are much thinner than most, leading to a "naked" or "unarmoured" appearance.
Typical habitats
Lakes and ponds with moderate to good water quality
