Algal factsheet: Haematococcus (Chlamydomonadaceae)
Diagnostic features
Unicellular chlorophyte with rounded to slightly pear-shaped cells and 2 flagella of equal length. Strands of cytoplasm span a clear space between the protoplast and the cell wall. Bright red accessory pigment usually masks the green chloroplasts.
Typical habitats
Occasionally found in ponds or puddles; common in bird-baths.
Notes
Their unusual red pigmentation may turn the water deep red.
