Algal factsheet: Audouinella hermanii (Acrochaetiaceae)


Diagnostic features

Branched filamentous rhodophyte which may be pink or grey-green. Filaments end with rounded cell tips or sometimes with bulbous sporangia. The filaments are one cell wide.  Side branches have a similar thickness to the main axis and are not strongly tapered.  May be impossible to distinguish from the "Audouinella stage" of Batrachospermum.

Typical habitats

Flowing or still waters, especially shaded, attached to solid streambed surfaces or to aquatic plants

Notes

A common pest in aquaria (visible as grey-green or black tufts attached to surfaces).
