Diagnostic features
Filaments arranged with a central stem supporting whorls/tufts of fine, branching filaments. Often pink but may also be blue-green, purple, brown or yellow. Distinguished from Draparnaldia (green alga) by colour, and having less branched secondary filaments.Typical habitats
Common in slow-flowing streams, especially shady sites.Classification
