Diagnostic features
Filamentous rhodophyte with roughly square or rectangular cells loosely aligned in branching mucilaginous tubes. The cells are usually blue-green in colour. On close inspection the star-shaped blue-green chloroplast can be seen, with a large pyrenoid in the centre.Typical habitats
