Diagnostic features
Valves identical, each possessing a raphe (i.e. the genus is biraphid). Frustules ovoid in valve view; the ends are bluntly rounded. There is a prominent longitudinal centre line, interrupted by an empty central area. The valve is heavily ribbed.Typical habitats
