Algal factsheet: Sirogonium (Zygnemataceae)
Diagnostic features
Unbranched filamentous zygnematalean with cylindrical cells, each of which has two or more linear or slightly twisted, ribbon-like green chloroplasts containing pyrenoids. Chloroplasts strongly resemble those of Spirogyra (a close relative), but are not spiralled. Conjugation also differs from that in Spirogyra, by lacking conjugation tubes.
