Diagnostic features

Cells arranged in chains like a string of beads (very deep constrictions between cells). Occasional enlarged heterocytes and akinetes. May or may not be surrounded by mucilage, forming a gelatinous mass. Forms thick blue-green scums.

Typical habitats

Blooms in nutrient rich lakes/ponds in spring/summer
