Geothermal systems are those that are highly influenced by heat sources from within the earth. Heat may flow directly through the ground, or come from heated water or steam. Geothermal soils may be highly acidic and have toxic concentrations of certain elements. In New Zealand, geothermal ecosystems are concentrated in the central North Island.
