Comparative Sector Survey

Landcare Research have been surveying New Zealand food and beverage manufacturers and exporters to explore current environmental / sustainability practices and identify the issues and demands of export markets which relate to environment and sustainability. The survey was first undertaken in 2007, followed by a second one in 2012. Another survey is proposed for 2014/15 to provide up to date insights and intelligence for the sector as well as policy makers.

The 2012 survey showed that food and beverage exporters are faced with a greater number of specific market requirements and are more likely to be audited by their clients even though demands for certifications and product eco-labelling had declined. More companies have undertaken compliance with a NZ or international standard or code of practice – and there a wide range of options available. The most significant change between the 2007 and 2012 results was the increased concern about the impacts of climate change and carbon emissions. There is also a higher acceptance of government regulation as a factor to stimulate adoption of sustainability practices and establish a level playing field for performance.
