Avian pox in silvereyes has been reported by several survey participants. It is a disease caused by Avipoxvirus that causes growths around the base of the bill, eyes, legs, and feet. The virus can be transmitted by contact with infected birds, when they congregate around bird feeders for example, or by ingestion of contaminated food or water. It can cause high mortality. Silvereyes are prime candidates for avian pox because they form large flocks, and congregate around bird feeders (e.g. sugar-water feeders) in domestic gardens in winter. Thus, it is important to wash bird feeders regularly.
