Checklist of New Zealand Hymenoptera
Version 7, 2009
This checklist records 721 described hymenopteran species, and another 146 genus-only records. In additon, there are almost 1000 undescribed or undetermined species known from existing collections. The true number of hymenopteran species in New Zealand could be in excess of 3000.
The classification used in the checklist follows that of Sharkey (2007: Phylogeny and classification of Hymenoptera. Zootaxa 1668: 521–548). Over 500 genera from 47 families are currently recorded from New Zealand.
The checklist is based upon Valentine and Walker's 1991 Annotated Catalogue of New Zealand Hymenoptera (which lists 549 species of Hymenoptera in 291 genera), and also the work done by Jo Berry on previous versions of this checklist.
Conventions in the checklist: CB = classical biological control introduction; E = endemic, only known from New Zealand (for species-level taxa); P = imported purposefully for pollination; A = accidentally introduced; N = native to New Zealand but also native elsewhere.
This checklist will be updated as required or appropriate. Not all available information is presented here; more information on specific taxa can be requested. Authors of taxonomic changes and other people with information about corrections or additions are encouraged to notify the Primary Contact: (see below) and to send reprints or photocopies of publications regarding these matters.
