The teaching resources were developed by Len Doel after he was inspired by his experiences working on science projects in Antarctica to share what he had learnt with his students.
Len is a Pukekohe primary school teacher and noted wildlife photogapher. In 2008 he won a New Zealand Science, Mathematics and Technology Teacher Fellowship and, as part of his year learning about ' Technology that Scientists Use to Gather Data in Extreme Events and Environments', he spent the 2008/09 summer season working in Antarctica. Len worked on two science projects, studying Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) at Cape Bird and micro-organisms in the Dry Valley area.
