Species of interest
Focus group participants were generally most interested in knowing about and monitoring native New Zealand birds.
Most participants were especially interested in forest species and species they liked seeing within the city and in their own gardens.
- The community conservation group participants provided the longest lists of species of interest. In addition to native species, community group members also noted an interest in garden birds generally – perhaps reflecting their participation in the national Garden Bird survey.
- Maori participants spoke of “taonga species”.
- Bird professionals and science enthusiasts, in particular, expressed interest in migratory birds and species associated with particular environments or ecosystems such as wetlands and rivers, and coastal areas.
- Bio-security managers expressed a need for monitoring current or potential invasive or pest bird species and their impacts.
A visual summary
The Figure below provides a visual summary of the bird species of interest; the particular interest in tūī reflects, to some extent, the protection and habitat restoration work of councils and conservation groups in Hawke's Bay and other parts of the North Island.
