Freshwater Policy symposium
Freshwater management in New Zealand has changed rapidly over the last 10 years, and we expect these changes to continue. These include the rollout of the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management, changes to monitoring and reporting on state and trend in aquatic environments, how decisions are made about freshwater resources, the way decisions are implemented and how the performance of those decisions is evaluated.
The Values, Monitoring and Outcomes (VMO) Programme, a research collaboration between Landcare Research, Cawthron Institute, NIWA, Lincoln University, Geoff Kaine Research and Margaret Kilvington, has been actively working with regional councils, central government agencies, community groups, Māori organisations, and some other agencies to address some of the issues and complexity of freshwater management, and provide tools to implement the recent freshwater reforms.
This symposium brings together 6 years of research from the VMO programme as well as insights from the Wheel of Water programme. The day will cover:
- Some reflections on the changing paradigms around managing our freshwater resources
- Building better freshwater monitoring capacity
- Understanding what good iwi/hapu engagement looks like
- Implementing collaboration
It will also provide an opportunity to discuss with your peers some key questions that arise from the day or to raise questions based on your own experiences.
The symposium offers an excellent forum to learn, explore and debate the myriad of questions and insights from our research and hear from those implementing the changes.
