Identification key to the New Zealand Heteroptera families (Insecta: Hemiptera)

This fully illustrated interactive identification key was built using the Lucid 3.6 software; it is the first ever identification key to the families of Heteroptera recorded from New Zealand. This multi-access key is based on a matrix of nearly 100 morphological characters and character states (or features) coded against families (entities). Robustness and relevance of the key in a New Zealand context are maximised by including only family-level characters distributed among genera occurring in this country. Although the key focuses on families it also allows 13 genera to be directly identified as unique representatives of their affiliated families.

Notes on key versions.

Version 1.0 of the key was published in May 2012 in the online serial The New Zealand Hemiptera that was hosted by the Landcare Research website version archived in August 2012. In version 1.0 the matrix behind the key had received basic testing and 50% of illustrations were provided. Version 2.0 of the key is published as a self-contained resource with more flexible web-hosting options as well as an enhanced and thoroughly tested character matrix. The key is fully illustrated.
