Bellbird

Did you know that bellbirds vary their songs according to the places they live? Bellbirds help us look after our native plants by pollinating their flowers.

Scientific name: Anthornis melanura
Other names: bell bird, korimako, kōkōmako, kōpara, kōmako, makomako, mockie, New Zealand bellbird, rearea

New Zealand Status: Native (Endemic)
Conservation Status: Not threatened

Where they feed: Shrubs and trees
What they eat: Invertebrates, fruit and nectar

Garden types

Bellbirds are almost twice as likely to be found in rural gardens (c. 20%) as urban ones (c. 12%). Feeding birds does not influence your chance of seeing a bellbird.

Garden location

Bellbirds are most likely to be found in gardens in the western and southern regions of the South Island. They are least likely to be seen in gardens in Northland, Auckland and Taranaki.
