Myna

Myna

Mynas are native to Asia and were intentionaly brought to New Zealand. They feed on fruit trees, causing damage to crops, so are considered pests.

Scientific name: Acridotheres tristis
Other names: common myna, Indian myna, mynah

New Zealand Status: Introduced
Conservation Status: Naturalised

Where they feed: Ground
What they eat: Invertebrates, fruit, eggs, small vertebrates (e.g. frogs, mammals), carrion

Garden types

Mynas are only found in about 10% of surveyed gardens. They are slightly more common in urban gardens where people feed birds.

Garden location

Mynas are highly unlikely to be found in gardens on the South Island. The chance of a myna being seen in a garden on the North Island increases the further north you go.
