BEST: Building biodiversity into an ecosystem service-based approach for resource management

The BEST Symposium was held in Wellington on 1 May 2019. The management of New Zealand's natural resources continues to be an important issue with diverse experiences and emergent challenges for agencies and communities across the country. Over the last 6 years, the Building biodiversity into an ecosystem service-based approach for resource management (BEST) research programme has been a part of this journey and has much to share.

Our research has focused on how to make integrated decisions where multiple issues need to be addressed, rather than dealing with issues individually. The framing used for this research is around natural capital, biodiversity, and ecosystem flows to integrate across scales and issues.

The Symposium brought together key stakeholders from research, regional councils, central government, Māori organisations, and industry sectors to learn about the research findings, to discuss how these approaches could be used to address the challenges of today and tomorrow, and to identify constraints to using these more integrated approaches to decisions
